Today marks the start of ‘Organic September’ – which as you can imagine is something we support wholeheartedly!
Earlier this year we made a conscious decision to relaunch our Compassionate Tee-Shop partnering with the most ethical suppliers on the planet – Rapanui – using their online print-on-demand software – Teemill (popular with many of the UK’s best known charities and not-for-profits). All of our products in our Tee-Shop are now 100% organic or bamboo, and as sustainable and eco-friendly as is possible in this day and age, and as affordable as we can make them.
Organic is sadly not the norm (neither is ethical) which is why it usually costs more to buy organic clothing – because quite simply, it costs more to produce the materials. Unless you push your price tags right up to ‘designer’ level there is a much smaller profit margin, but we figured that sometimes… you just have to do the right thing.
Launched by the Soil Association, Organic September celebrates everything organic – from food to fashion.
So why fashion? Because, choosing organic cotton means higher quality products that are softer, kinder to skin, better for the environment and the people that make them. And our customers really feel the difference! But don’t just take our word for it!…
“I love love love this Tshirt! The design is really pretty and unusual. It fits really well, the sizing is spot on. There is a big difference between regular cotton and organic sustainable cotton. Not only is it better for the environment, but it feels just so much softer.”
Much like organic cosmetics, there is currently no legal standard in place to protect organic fashion and textiles, meaning there could be clothes sold as ‘organic’ that simply aren’t. Make sure you look for the GOTS certification on your clothes labels – its the Global Organic Textile Standard. Certified organic cotton delivers proven benefits for people and planet- when it comes to making sustainability claims you can trust, nothing beats it.
There are a number of reasons why choosing organic cotton is important for both the environment and the people who grow and pick the cotton. Here’s our top 5: (info courtesy of Soil Association)
- Better for the environment
Organic fibres are grown without the use of synthetic fertilisers or potentially toxic pesticides. By building soil fertility, organic farmers help lock CO2 into the soil, helping mitigate climate change. It also avoids the use of the toxic pesticides that, in non-organic systems, are responsible for poisoning wildlife and rivers, as well as killing an estimated 16,000 people each year.
- It’s non GM
GM is banned in organic systems, while an estimated a significant amount of all cotton grown worldwide is genetically modified. GM cotton poses a potential risk to wildlife and human health, as well as exposing farmers to unnecessary expense.
- There’s restricted use of chemicals and limited residues
GOTS ensures that the chemicals used in processing textiles meet strict requirements on toxicity and biodegradability. Final products are restricted in the amount of allergenic, carcinogenic or toxic chemical residues. These residues can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin and may cause allergies, skin rashes or respiratory problems. In contrast, non-organic manufacture uses tens of thousands of acutely toxic chemicals, many of which are classified as hazardous by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
- Better for workers
Organic farming helps farmers feed their families, as other crops, which can be eaten or sold, are grown alongside the main crop as part of the crop rotation.
- Factory conditions are better
Poor working conditions and rights in the garments industry are common place. GOTS certified organic textiles must meet social criteria based on the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions. These cover minimum wages, working hours, child labour, freedom of association, discrimination, harsh or inhumane treatment and more.
“Brilliant Purchase! I bought the Lion T-Shirt for my dad’s birthday. He absolutely loved it. Being able to tell him about the ethics behind the t-shirt was an added bonus… and that it’s made from organic cotton in a wind-powered factory… Perfect gift, sender and recipient both very happy :)”
Our award winning organic suppliers Rapanui
With award winning traceability from seed to shop, all garments in our Compassionate Tee-Shop are made by Rapanui with organic cotton or bamboo using clean renewable energy from low carbon wind and solar powered factories, and are printed with environmentally friendly inks using low waste state-of-the-art print-on-demand technology.
Rapanui are of course Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, and use organic cotton or bamboo to make all our tees and tops (and sweats and hoodies coming this Autumn!).
Buying from companies with organic cotton certification, means that the wider supply chain has been audited with all inputs (like inks, dyes and printing) and business ethics having met a strict standard or criteria.
“I love everything about this T shirt from its beautifully soft material to the stunning bright blue colour [and] the design. A great top to brighten to your day!”
